Britton Wilson, the reigning NCAA Division 1 champion in the women's 400-meter hurdles and indoor 4x400-meter relay representing Arkansas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing July 19 at the World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Wilson, 21, produced the No. 3 all-dates performance in collegiate history June 25 at the USATF Championships at Hayward Field by clocking 53.08 seconds, also elevating to the No. 10 all-time American competitor and equal to the No. 24 athlete in the world. Wilson is one of four American athletes scheduled to compete in Eugene in the 400 hurdles, along with three of the five fastest women in history in world-record holder and Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin (51.41), reigning World champion Dalilah Muhammad (51.58) and 2014 World Under-20 gold medalist Shamier Little (51.58), who is No. 5 all-time at 52.39. She explains the benefits of training with Little, with both athletes being trained by Arkansas associate head coach Chris Johnson. Wilson revisits becoming the first athlete in Southeastern Conference history to win the 400-meter title and 400 hurdles in the same year, clocking 50.05 and 53.75 on May 14 at Ole Miss, in addition to producing the fastest all-time 4x400 relay split with her 48.60 anchor leg to help the Razorbacks run 3:22.55. She also ran a 49.83 split in the indoor 4x400, the second-fastest performance collegiately and in the world. Wilson reflects on her first opportunity to compete for the United States in 2019 at the Pan American Under-20 Championships in Costa Rica and the progress and improvements she has demonstrated since then, in order to qualify for her first senior level national team. She explains how meaningful it is for the Razorbacks to have four current athletes participating in the World Championships, along with Venezuela's Yoveinny Mota in the 100 hurdles, Tennessee transfer Wayne Pinnock representing Jamaica in the long jump and Puerto Rico's Ayden Owens-Delerme in the decathlon, part of a group of 15 competitors overall with connections to the Arkansas program or who train in Fayetteville. Wilson shares the leap of faith she made to transfer from Tennessee to Arkansas, and how the collaboration with coach Johnson and the support of her family, friends and teammates have benefited her during the past year.
